Fidelity Investments

User Experience Designer Intern

June - August 2019 • Jersey City, NJ

What I liked

I gained so much experience in not only learning about UX, but collaborating with others both in person and via online video conferences. From time management to communicating with others, I was able to exercise many skills that will help me succeed at any job I take on in the future. My team was incredibly supportive and would be open to helping me at any point.

What I wish was different

Commute was a bit shorter, but this wasn't something I couldn't control

Advice

Be ready to learn quickly, but don't be afraid to ask questions on the way!

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the work culture! I found the agile environment to be very stimulating and there was never a dull moment. The learning curve was ongoing and manageable which I appreciated since I received a lot of support and encouragement from my team members throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

I did not feel as prepared as I could have been coming into the internship. My manager had me dynamically pick up an entire new programming language in a short amount of time. There were plenty of internal resources at the company to leverage however and help me through the learning curve.

Advice

If you ever feel overwhelmed with an assignment and project you have been tasked with, leverage your resources! Speak up and talk to your team members and figure out what you are stuck with or what seems overwhelming! Timelines are usually flexible and project deliverables can be readjusted to your abilities and interests.

At such a large company, its important to make more conversation and actively get your name out beyond your team- its easy to get lost as just another young face in as big a group as this one

What I liked

My manager and others that I reported to were very helpful in encouraging me to broaden my network, set up networking events, and explaining the different roles within the organization.

What I wish was different

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Merrimack, NH

What I liked

I liked the work quite a bit. They gave the opportunity to solve real problems and most people treat you like a full-time employee.

What I wish was different

I wish they would provide housing. Housing in the area is pretty expensive if you are too far away to bring your own furniture. The other thing is that Fidelity has offices all over the world, so most of the work is done over videoconferencing. This means that most of the people you work with, you will rarely, if ever, see in person.

Advice

Make sure you understand what is going on. Ask a lot of questions early. Don't let time go by where you do nothing because you don't know what is going on.

What I wish was different

Business Strategy and Operations Intern

June - August 2019 • Jersey City, NJ

What I liked

Fidelity had a very structured internship program, and during my time there, I was valued as a regular employee. Our internship program allowed me to interact with other interns regularly, and we also collaborated on an intern project that we presented to Senior Leaders. I also had a phenomenal manager during my time at Fidelity that was crucial to helping me secure a full-time role after I graduate. My manager, Jackie Silva, had always assured me that what I did was valuable and appreciated, and regularly praised me for my work.
