WEX Inc.

Artificial Intelligence Intern

May 2023 • Portland, ME

What I liked

The approachability and friendliness of my coworkers, despite the job being remote, was unmatched. I felt comfortable from day one with my team which gave me the confidence to excel in my position.

What I wish was different

I would not change anything about this internship. I was able to learn and grow while making several meaningful connections.

Advice

Reach out to people in the company who are further along in their career than you are. Ask for their advice, how they got to where they are, what you can do to make yourself stand out as an intern, etc. During my time at WEX, I was given several valuable resources and pieces of advice from my coworkers and manager that helped reassure me that I was in the right career and how to reach my goals.

Business Analyst Intern

May 2019 • Portland, ME

What I liked

It was an extremely positive and encouraging environment, I loved Portland as well as the company culture! WEX also just got rated as the number four internship by Vault. They also paid for housing which was nice as I was not from Maine.

What I wish was different

The living situation was a little far away, but I know they're working on closer residencies for the next summer.

Advice

Step out of your comfort zone, I found out about this internship because I googled "Internships in Maine" and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made to accept the offer for a summer internship.

Partner Services Intern

May 2018 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I love the people that I work with, and the variety of work that is sent to me keeps be busy and interested. I also have a ton of flexibility with my schedule during school, I usually work remotely since I am given a company laptop, and when I am in the office, I am included in all company trips, events, and outings. I have been given a lot of experiences by doing a work trip with my team, being included in conferences, and visiting with clients.

What I wish was different

I don't have a lot of standing projects, since I am the first intern to have ever held my position, but I get a little projects that will keep me busy.

Advice

Don't be afraid to advocate yourself to ask for more challenging work, or more projects. There have been a few times when I work on breaks, or in the summer, when I have completed all the work they have sent me and so I have had to go ask my boss, other co-workers, or even my bosses' boss for additional work.
